What You Need to Know

01

What is a remote online notery?

Remote Online Notarization (RON) allows an eligible signer to appear before a notary through real-time audio-video communication rather than meeting in person. The notary verifies the signer's identity and completes the applicable notarial act through the required remote process.

03

Can clients outside Illinois use your RON services?

Potentially, yes. Illinois law permits an Illinois electronic notary who is physically located in Illinois to perform electronic notarial acts for a remotely located individual who is outside Illinois but within the United States, subject to applicable requirements and any limitations affecting the particular document or transaction.

05

Do I need to sign my document before my appointment?

It depends on the type of notarial act. For an acknowledgment, you may acknowledge an existing signature. A jurat generally requires you to sign in the notary's presence after taking an oath or affirmation. Never sign an unsigned document in advance when the required notarial act calls for signing in the notary's presence. If you are unsure, contact the attorney, business, agency, or other professional who prepared or provided the document.

07

What areas do you serve?

Our Mobile Notary Services are available by appointment throughout Kendall, Kane, DuPage, and Will Counties, Illinois. Our RON services are available to eligible signers in Illinois and, where permitted under Illinois law, to remotely located signers elsewhere in the United States. Click here to get started.

09

What types of documents can be notarized?

Depending on the document and applicable requirements, PES may provide notarization for Powers of Attorney, estate planning documents, affidavits, acknowledgments, jurats, healthcare documents, business documents, contracts, and other eligible documents. Whether a document qualifies for RON depends on the circumstances and applicable law. Please reach out to us with any questions.

11

Do you offer after-hours appointments??

After-hours and urgent appointments may be available by appointment and subject to availability. Please contact PES in advance to discuss your scheduling needs and applicable charges.

13

Witnesses: Do I need to provide one?

If your document requires one or more witnesses, please advise PES before booking your appointment. Witness requirements can vary depending on the document and transaction. The notary does not determine whether witnesses are legally required; that determination should come from the attorney, business, agency, or other professional who prepared or provided the document. (Additional fees may be required)

02

Can I use a Remote Online Notary from anywhere in Illinois?

Yes. An Illinois electronic notary may perform authorized electronic notarial acts while physically located in Illinois for a remotely located signer, provided the transaction meets the applicable Illinois requirements.

04

What identification do I need?

You must provide acceptable identification that allows the notary to satisfactorily establish your identity. Illinois recognizes satisfactory evidence based on personal knowledge, a qualifying credible witness, or identification documents that meet the applicable requirements and are not expired. For remote notarization, the notary must be able to properly examine the identification through the required process.

06

What if I need a Mobile Notary?

PES also offers Mobile Notary Services by appointment. A notary may meet you at an agreed-upon location within our service area, subject to availability and the requirements of the document. (A deposit may be required upon booking.)

08

Can you come to a hospital or nursing facility?

Yes. Mobile appointments may be available at hospitals, nursing facilities, healthcare facilities, homes, offices, and other agreed-upon locations within our service area. Appointments are required, and the signer must meet all applicable requirements for notarization.

10

How much does notarization cost?

Illinois law establishes maximum fees for notarial acts. The maximum fee for a non-electronic notarial act is generally $5, while the maximum fee for an electronic notarial act is $25, subject to statutory exceptions. Any additional service-related charges must be handled separately and in accordance with applicable law. PES can provide the applicable pricing before your appointment and/or at time of booking.

12

What happens if I don't know what type of notarization I need?

That's okay. PES does not provide legal advice or determine which notarial act your document requires. If you are unsure whether your document requires an acknowledgment, jurat, or another notarial act, please contact the attorney, business, agency, or other professional who prepared or provided the document for guidance before your appointment.
